About Me

Miley looking for fish on the bridge

I am a firm believer in the importance of self-care and make it a priority to engage in activities that promote my overall well-being. I enjoy indulging in my hobbies of gardening, baking, knitting, sewing, painting, drawing, and taking dips in the ocean. My hobbies are what keep me grounded when life around me becomes a little overwhelming. Another grounding force in my life is my dog Miley; she gets me out of the house every day rain or shine, and is an endless source of entertainment. Check out my Blog to learn more about our lives in Oona River.

My Hobbies

Kitten climbing into a basket which has flowers in it

Gardening

As it is not always possible to get fresh produce on the island, I am trying my hand at gardening. Over that last couple years, I have been learning all about what grows here, how to deer and mouse proof, and what soil works best.

Baking

I have been baking for as long as I can remember; anything from cookies to wedding cakes! However, recently I was introduced to a new challenge, I was diagnosed with celiac disease. Now I must explore the world of gluten free baking.

Knitting

Knitting is definitely one of my favourite pass times, particularly knitting socks! I have been knitting so long I rarely even look at my stitches anymore. With each new pair of socks I knit, I like to try a new colour or texture.

Sewing

I am beginning to get more ambitious with my sewing projects. I recently finished a dress, and have plans to start another. I have also turned my hobby of making reusable gift bags into a small business! View my AmandaInOona page for more!

Painting

I find painting to be my most relaxing hobby. I try to focus on the process rather than the end result, and paint what I know (my favourite swimming spot). Not every painting turns out as I would like, but there is no rule saying you have to be good at your hobbies.

Drawing

Drawing is a fairly dormant hobby, but when I pick it up, I really enjoy how mindless it can be. I usually limit myself to using a ballpoint pen, then I can focus on the strokes rather than the whole picture.

Ocean Plunges

If you have never tried going for a dip in the freezing cold winter ocean, I would strongly recommend it. It brings me clarity, serenity, and energy. Taking even a 5 second dip can change your whole out look on a day. I find it a useful tool when I am in need of a reset.
